You can nearly see the Jeep® company’s history when you look at one of its products. The durability shines, the adventure awaits, and the freedom can be felt. For 75 years, Jeep has produced tried-and-true products to tackle the roughest of terrains and atmospheres.
Jeep history began in a turbulent period. In 1940, World War II was in the distance and the U.S. Army needed a tough vehicle. The result was the Willy: a versatile, rough 4x4 that eventually adapted its way into civilian life, especially to farmers who greatly benefited from such new technology. Eventually, more modifications were adapted for the Willy MB to move into daily consumers’ lives. In 1946, Jeep debuted the 463 station wagon which introduced the first-of-its-kind fold-down tailgate hatch.
The innovation didn’t stop there. The company expanded its market reach by debuting various pick-up models and the Jeep Jeepster, its affordable sports car. In the 1950s, there was a strong focus on recreation and new engineering feats, such as enhanced suspension capabilities and more powerful engines. As Jeep continued to assist in producing war-time vehicles, more commercial development was on the rise with the CJ-5 and Wagoneer. By the 70’s there were 14 models in the Jeep line-up—ranging from trucks to SUVs to station wagons.
