Even when you drive one of the most fuel-efficient cars available at Mike Toler, you could still find yourself facing poor gas mileage. The way you care for your vehicle can greatly effect its efficiency. Even the way you drive affects how much you’ll get out of each tank of gas.

Don’t Skip Your Oil Changes

We often see drivers that stretch their oil changes out well past their recommended maintenance date. While your car may seem to be working fine, you could be doing more damage than you realize.

Your engine oil becomes dirty and thickens over time, so it won’t flow through your engine as freely as it should. This diminishes your engine’s performance, which forces your vehicle to consume more fuel than necessary.

Watch Your Speed

Your fuel efficiency drops as your speed increases. You’ll usually start to see the dip when you hit 50 mph. It’s also important to follow the speed limit too.

If you don’t stick with the flow of traffic, you’ll find yourself constantly accelerating and decelerating, which is also bad for your fuel economy. Try to stay a safe distance from other traffic on the road to help keep you at a consistent speed. Utilize cruise control whenever it’s safe to do so too.

Inspect Your Tires

Your tire inflation can also have a major impact on your fuel efficiency. If they are underinflated, they’ll have extra contact with the road, which forces more rolling resistance.

This means that your engine will have to work harder and will require more gasoline. If your tires are overinflated, on the other hand, they’ll wear unevenly which will also diminish their performance.
