New RAM trucks and Jeep® SUVs will be leaving some giant footprints in the EV segment soon. That leaves many drivers wondering: how much does it cost to charge an EV, and does it cost as much as filling up at the gas station? Mike Toler Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM takes a closer look.

Charging Options

There are three levels available when charging an EV or PHEV. Level 1 chargers are 120 volts, a standard household outlet, while Level 2 chargers are 240 volts; these can be installed at home and are the most common public charging stations.

Level 3 DC Fast Chargers are 480 volts or more. They’re found only at select public fast-charging stations. While they’re not suitable for PHEVs like the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe, they can get an EV to a full charge in under an hour in many cases.

Home Charging

If you’re wondering where the closest EV charger is, the answer might be closer than you think. You can charge your vehicle using a standard household outlet (it’ll be slow, however) or install a 240-volt charger at home. The latter option costs about $2,000 for parts and labor and should only be done by a professional installer (we’ll make the introductions).

Figuring Out Charging Costs

Charging costs vary so widely at public charging stations that quoting a formula or fixed rate is impossible. Home charging is an easier nut to crack since all it requires is your electric bill and some back-of-the-envelope math.

Find your cost per kilowatt-hour (kWh) of electricity. From there, it’s a matter of multiplying that cost by your vehicle’s kWh per 100 miles. Charging during off-peak hours when rates are lower is a good way to save money, and it’s an option you can’t get at the gas station.
