If you’re planning to start a business, it is a good idea to familiarize yourself with the rules and regulations relevant to your endeavor. If you need to transport equipment or machinery, RAM HD trucks are an excellent choice, but it’s important to understand how regular vehicles differ from commercial ones. Mike Toler Chrysler Dodge Jeep® RAM offers some insight.

Pay Attention to Gross Vehicle Weight Rating

The gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) is essential when assessing whether or not a truck will be considered commercial. The GVWR is the combined weight of the vehicle, cargo, passengers, and fluids. According to the North Carolina Department of Public Safety, any vehicle with a GVWR of over 10,000 pounds is a commercial auto. This designation applies to trucks, vans, and tractor-trailers. It should be noted that vehicles that carry hazardous materials are considered commercial vehicles regardless of GVWR in North Carolina.

When Do You Need a Commercial Driver’s License?

If you use a truck as part of your business or plan to, you may have questions about licensing. Even if the GVWR of your vehicle is more than 10,000 pounds, you may not have to get a commercial driver’s license (CDL). In North Carolina, the GVWR has to exceed 26,000 pounds before you need to get a CDL. But again, if you will be transporting hazardous materials, a CDL will be required.
